About Me

Cinematographer. Filmmaker. Storyteller.

The mediums used in my works are sculpture and experimental media arts. My focus on sfx and vfx are the reason why this range of mediums are used. While I can apply sculpture to practical effects with mold-making and creating props among other things, I can apply experimental media arts to visual effects with post production editing and compositing.

Growing up I studied horror, thriller, fantasy, and sometimes action films. In other words, as a kid I watched behind the scenes bonus features to learn how characters, props, puppets, and sets are made. This was especially true with horror films like Jaws that by doing so I got a greater understanding of the man-made monsters and lessen my fear. Jim Henson’s Labyrinth was a revelation. It is easier to handle and digest fantasy horror than to directly address the horrors we live through. Some of my previous works were about real-life issues like the Trump wall, human trafficking, break-ins, and relationship abuse. These were issues that hit close to home. While my works addressed these issues given by reality, I realize I prefer to make less direct pieces instead of creating a feedback loop of the outright darkness reality holds. The works I create now focus on made-up situations and made-up monsters. Monsters carry meaning as symbols of real-world horrors; and can be easier to digest.

Evoking emotion with my work is satisfying to me. Fear and unease are in particular themes of my works. I utilize our innate fear of
darkness; our brain tricks us into seeing things hiding in darkness. Aside from the use of lighting and lack of to assist in eliciting
certain emotional responses, I also use sound. I feel that macabre, disturbing, and dark ideas underlie much of my work. Another
aspect is balance. I place structures in the middle of a work or equally distribute on each side so nothing in the scene is too heavy or
overwhelming. I like to stabilize people so that they feel secure and are unsuspecting. This stabilization when it gets disrupted
further plays into evoking emotions, like fear in the viewers. While I use fear and unease as a theme in many of my works, I also use
wonder. This can be seen in some of my more fantastical works. A collision of unease and wonder occur in my works that are more
fantasy driven. I still incorporate things such as monsters or beasts in some form with these works. As with many fantasy works of
film or literature, there are new worlds or creatures created that are unknown and therefore feared. For the horrors of the real
world are at times confusing.
